Inspired by the popular blog Half of Me, the book will be published by Seal Press in May 2008.
Wait, if the blog is free, why should I buy the book?
There are several fantastic reasons to buy the book!
All New Material!
Over half of Half-Assed: A Weight-Loss Memoir contains never-before published material! Several chapters flesh out my early years, what it was like growing up fat, and all the scary details surrounding my gallbladder surgery. There are new observations and stories throughout the entire book. I also devote an entire chapter to how the blog impacted my weight loss, something I’ve rarely mentioned on my blog.
Narrative Flow!
The blog is a brain dump of my observations and experiences over the years, which can be tiring to read as I jump from topic to topic. But the book has an arc, a narrative, a—dare-I-say?—story line! This is not a cut and paste job. Months were spent keeled over a keyboard to make paragraphs flow effortlessly into one another. Ideas are organized thematically for greater impact. There is a beginning, middle and an end.
Remastered and Restored!
Any material that I did pull from the blog was digitally enhanced for your viewing pleasure. Extraneous prepositions were culled, tangents were cut and every word was polished to a shiny luster. Blog entries are written fast by necessity, but months were spent editing and revising the material in the book for best presentation. Only the best entries made the cut, so there is no need to read through blog posts I wrote 5 minutes before I ran to work.
Permanent keepsake in handy book form!
I don’t have any plans to shut down my blog, but who knows if it will still be around 5 years from now? The book is a permanent copy of my writing that you can keep on your bookshelf for years to come. It’s also much nicer to curl up on the couch with a book than to snuggle with a blog on your laptop.
